Walk onto any dealership floor and the hiring manager's inbox looks the same. Stacks of applications pile up for every open seat, with experienced closers and green-pea hopefuls chasing the same desk.

Shortlisted car salesman resumes show consistent units moved month over month, not vague claims about being a people person. Screeners scan for board numbers, gross per copy, and CSI scores before anything else. Give them proof you can put deals on the board.

The examples below span new car sales, used car sales, and finance-adjacent closers, from entry level up to senior. They show you how to translate your board numbers into a resume that gets you to the test drive of the interview.

Tip !

The car salesman resumes that general sales managers shortlist share three things: a monthly unit count on every role, front-end gross or PVR attached to those units, and a CSI score that holds up across at least two reporting quarters.

Why this resume works

  • Numbers tied to revenue: Listing units per month and total retail dollars gives a hiring GM something to compare against the store’s current floor average.
  • Repeat business stands out: Calling out that referrals drive 40% of deliveries signals a real book of business, not just walk-in luck.
  • Brand certification included: Toyota Certified Sales Professional tells managers the candidate already knows the product training a new hire would have to complete.

Entry Level Example

The entry-level tab fits first-year salespeople, lot porters moving onto the floor, and retail closers crossing into auto sales. This resume needs to prove product knowledge, a clean training record, and any early units logged during a mentor or split-deal period.

Use This Template

Why this resume works

  • Hit the ramp goal: Beating the new-hire target of 6 units shows the candidate is already producing, which is what entry-level sales managers want to see.
  • Retail background carries over: Upselling and handling returns at a retail job translates directly to closing and objection handling on the lot.
  • Bilingual is a real edge: Spanish is a practical asset in most Sun Belt dealerships and gets called out in the skills list where it can be found by ATS filters.

Experienced Example

The experienced tab fits salespeople with 2 to 5 years on the floor and a steady monthly unit count. This resume needs to prove repeatable production, CSI scores at or above store average, and fluency in the DMS and CRM the store runs deals through.

Experienced Example - Car Salesman

Use This Template

Why this resume works

  • Annual units stated clearly: Reporting 196 units for the year and team ranking lets a hiring manager benchmark against their current top producers in a few seconds.
  • CSI score beats the region: A 94 against a 89 benchmark shows the candidate sells volume without burning customer satisfaction, which protects dealer rebates.
  • Internet conversion above store average: Beating the store’s average lead close rate signals discipline with BDC follow-up, which is where most experienced salespeople fall off.

Senior Example

The senior tab fits top producers, finance-track salespeople, and lead or closer roles moving toward sales manager or F&I. This resume needs to prove sustained unit volume, front and back-end gross numbers, and mentoring or desk-support work that scales the floor.

Senior Example - Car Salesman
PDF

Use This Template

Why this resume works

  • Grew the gross per unit: Lifting front-end gross by more than $700 a car is the metric a dealer principal cares about most when hiring a sales manager.
  • Career arc into management: Consultant to finance to sales manager shows the candidate understands both the deal box and the floor, which is rare in a single hire.
  • New hires actually stuck: Reporting that 9 of 11 hires are still on the team speaks to coaching and retention, not just headcount.

How to Write a Car Salesman Resume

01 Open with the metric a general sales manager would use to size you up

The first line of your summary should name your monthly unit count, your front-end gross average, and your most recent CSI score. General sales managers read those three numbers as your readiness to plug into their floor rotation.

Skip the soft opener about being people-oriented or hungry to learn. Lead with something like 18 units a month at $1,950 average front-end gross with a 94 CSI on a domestic franchise floor. That line tells a desk manager more in five seconds than a paragraph of adjectives.

02 Put unit counts and gross on every bullet

Every sales role on the resume needs numbers in the bullet, not just the summary.

Name the inventory mix you ran (new, used, CPO), the average days from first contact to delivery, and your close ratio on showroom ups versus internet leads when you have it.

03 Group the work by deal stage, not by task

Cluster your bullets into three or four categories a sales manager reads: prospecting and lead handling, demo and test drive, negotiation and desking, and finance handoff and delivery.

Under prospecting, name your BDC follow-up cadence, owner-base mining, and referral rate. Under demo and negotiation, name the trade appraisal tool, your write-up process, and how you handle the four-square. Under finance, name your product penetration and how you set up the F&I manager for a clean back-end.

04 Surface the DMS, CRM, and product training up top

Put a short tools-and-training block on page one, above or right under the summary. List the DMS and CRM you have run deals in (VinSolutions, CDK, Reynolds and Reynolds, Dealertrack, eLead) and any OEM product certifications you carry.

General sales managers want to see this early because it tells them how long your ramp will be. Name the manufacturer academies you finished (Ford, Toyota, GM, Stellantis, Honda) and any AFIP or compliance training, so the store knows you can desk a deal without a week of shadowing.

05 Cut anything that does not move units or gross

If a bullet does not tie back to units, gross, CSI, retention, or a tool the next store uses, cut it. Drop generic lines about greeting customers, maintaining lot appearance, or having a positive attitude.

Trim early jobs unrelated to retail sales down to a single line, and pull any role older than 10 years unless it was a long stretch at a name-brand dealer group. The page should read like a production sheet, not a job history.

Must Have on a Car Salesman Resume

Sort your terms by the sales desk where you work.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

General sales managers and BDC directors expect a niche keyword block that mirrors how they staff the floor. Group your terms by the sub-specialty you are targeting so the ATS and the human reader both find the match fast.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
New-car floor sales new car sales, OEM product certification, showroom ups, four-square negotiation
Used and CPO sales used car sales, certified pre-owned, trade appraisal, Kelley Blue Book
Internet and BDC sales internet sales manager, BDC follow-up, VinSolutions CRM, lead-to-appointment ratio
F&I and finance handoff F&I product penetration, back-end gross, AFIP certified, Dealertrack RouteOne
Production and customer metrics units sold per month, front-end gross, CSI score, close ratio

AI Skills to Add

Dealer groups are split between stores piloting AI chat and lead-scoring tools inside their CRM and stores that still want every up worked by a human on the floor. Name the tools you actually use, describe the workflow honestly, and avoid claims that you sell with AI when the real work is following up faster on scored leads.

What AI is actually changing for this role
Lead scoring in the CRM

VinSolutions and eLead now rank internet leads by intent, so you work the hot ups first instead of top-down by date.

AI chat and BDC handoff

Tools like Podium and Gubagoo qualify website chats before they hit the floor, shortening the gap between inquiry and appointment set.

Trade appraisal and pricing

Market-based pricing tools pull live comps so your trade number and asking price hold up when the customer pulls out their phone.

Follow-up content drafting

Generative tools draft personalized email and video follow-up scripts, which you edit before sending so the voice still sounds like you.

AI tools to name

  • VinSolutions Connect CRM with AI lead scoring: Use it to prioritize hot internet leads and time follow-up touches against scored intent.
  • Podium or Gubagoo AI chat: Use it to qualify website traffic and book appointments before the lead reaches your desk.
How to phrase AI on your resume
Do
  • Used VinSolutions AI lead scoring to prioritize 40 daily internet leads, lifting appointment-set rate from 18% to 27% over two quarters.
  • Drafted personalized video follow-ups with AI scripting tools, then re-recorded in my own voice, raising reply rate on cold leads by 14%.
Skip
  • AI-powered sales rockstar who leverages cutting-edge tools to revolutionize the customer journey.
  • Used ChatGPT to close deals and crush quota every month.

How to Show Your Sales Process on the Page

General sales managers want to see that you run a repeatable process, not that you wing every up. Organize the experience section around the road to the sale so a desk manager can map your bullets to the steps they already run.

  • Meet and greet: name your daily ups worked and your unsold follow-up cadence.
  • Needs assessment and selection: name how you qualify on payment, term, and trade.
  • Walk-around and demo: name the OEM product certifications you carry.
  • Write-up and trade appraisal: name the appraisal tool (Kelley Blue Book, Black Book, vAuto).
  • Negotiation and desking: name the four-square or one-pencil process and your close ratio.
  • F&I handoff: name your back-end product penetration and AFIP training if you carry it.
  • Delivery and follow-up: name your CSI score and your 30-, 60-, and 90-day touch cadence.

Automotive Sales Credentials That Get You the Job

Beyond a state sales license where required, the certifications below tell a general sales manager which OEM lineups you can sell from day one and how you handle compliance in the box.

  • OEM Product Certification (Ford, Toyota, GM, Stellantis, Honda): Signals you finished the manufacturer's product academy and can walk a customer through trim, powertrain, and tech without a cheat sheet.
  • AFIP Certification (Association of Finance and Insurance Professionals): Tells F&I-track stores you understand compliance and can sell back-end products without creating chargebacks or CFPB risk.
  • NADA Certified Sales Professional: Recognized across franchise dealer groups and signals you have completed structured training in process, ethics, and customer experience.
  • ASE Sales Certification: Useful for used-car and CPO floors because it shows you can speak to mechanical condition and inspection points during the walk-around.

Latest BLS Statistics for Car Salespeople

For car salesmen, the 10th-percentile floor sits well below the median and the top decile pulls well above it. That spread tells you the store you work at, the brand on the marquee, and your monthly unit count move you from floor to ceiling faster than tenure does. Luxury and high-volume import franchises sit higher than independent used-car lots, and top producers on commission plans clear the top decile by stacking units, not by waiting on raises.

Lead the resume with monthly units, front-end gross, and the franchise brand you sold under so the band you are targeting is obvious on the first read.

$34,580 National median annual
$37,150 National mean annual
$25,600 Entry-tier floor (10th percentile)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you describe a car salesman role on a resume?

Describe it as a production role, not a customer-service role. Lead each bullet with a number: monthly units, front-end gross, CSI score, or product penetration.

Name the franchise brand, the inventory mix (new, used, CPO), and the DMS and CRM you ran deals through. Skip soft phrases like passionate about cars and replace them with the close ratio and average gross that prove it.

What duties should I list for a car salesman on a resume?

List the duties that map to the seven-step road to the sale. Cover meet-and-greet, needs assessment, walk-around, demo and test drive, write-up and trade appraisal, negotiation, and F&I handoff.

Attach a number to each cluster where you can: ups worked, close ratio on showroom traffic, average gross per copy, and CSI from the manufacturer survey.

How do I write a car sales resume with no dealership experience?

Lead with transferable retail and commission experience. Furniture sales, mobile phone sales, jewelry, and timeshare all carry weight because the close process is similar.

Name the monthly revenue, units, or quota attainment you hit in those roles. Add any OEM product training or NADA coursework you have completed, and list the DMS or CRM systems you have practiced in.

Should I list specific vehicle brands and models on my resume?

Yes, name the franchise brands you sold under and the segments you know well. A general sales manager hiring for a Toyota store wants to see Toyota, Honda, or another import-volume brand on your history.

List the brand next to the dealer name, and call out specialty segments you closed in, like trucks, EVs, luxury, or CPO. This makes brand fit obvious on the first scan.

What's the best resume template for a car salesperson?

A professional template works well for showing your sales numbers and product training. An ATS-friendly template is worth a look, too.
