Hiring copywriters look for a portfolio link and a conversion metric near the top of the first page, because those two signals show whether the writer can move a number, not just turn a phrase.

Why this resume works

  • Numbers tied to revenue: The 28% add-to-cart lift and sub-$14 CPA show the writing actually moved business metrics, not just creative awards.
  • Range across formats: Bullets cover site, email, paid social, OOH, and video, which matches what most senior copywriter postings ask for.
  • Grew into more responsibility: The arc from junior to senior, plus mentoring two writers, signals readiness for an ACD conversation.

Junior Example

The junior archetype has one to three years of writing, often a mix of internships, freelance, and a first staff role. This resume needs to prove voice range, shipped work with live links, and one or two metrics tied to real campaigns.

Why this resume works

  • One real revenue win: The $11,400 recovered from a single email rewrite is the kind of concrete number hiring managers remember.
  • Internship still earns its spot: Listing the summer nonprofit work shows volume and range without padding the resume with school projects.
  • Honest about the level: The summary asks for mentorship instead of overclaiming, which reads as self-aware rather than green.

Senior Example

The senior archetype owns campaigns end to end and mentors juniors across email, web, and brand. This resume needs to prove repeat conversion lift, cross-channel range, and the brand voices you built or stewarded for named clients.

Senior Example - Copywriter

Why this resume works

  • Awareness lift is concrete: Moving unaided awareness from 14% to 31% is exactly the kind of measurable outcome senior copy roles want to see.
  • Mix of craft and influence: Selling through a risky idea to legal and winning an ADDY shows both the writing and the room-reading skills.
  • Clear category expertise: Banking, travel, and CPG give a recruiter three clean lanes to slot this candidate into when matching briefs.

Creative Director Example

The creative director archetype leads writers, sets brand voice, and presents to executives or clients. This resume needs to prove team size, P&L or pitch revenue you influenced, and the brand platforms you launched.

Why this resume works

  • Business outcomes, not just craft: $18M billings, $4.2M retainer growth, and the IPO contribution show this CD is fluent in the numbers a CMO cares about.
  • Built teams, not just decks: Promoting two seniors to ACD and standing up a 14-person in-house team prove leadership beyond personal output.
  • Both sides of the agency line: The mix of agency, in-house, and consultancy work signals someone who can choose the right model for a given brand problem.

How to Write a Copywriter Resume

01 Open with the one thing a portfolio click won't show

Put a single line at the top that a creative director can’t infer from your samples. Name the brand voices you’ve owned, the formats you ship weekly, or the verticals where you’ve moved conversion.

Examples: lifecycle email for two DTC skincare brands, B2B SaaS landing pages tied to demo bookings, or bilingual social copy in English and Spanish. This line frames the portfolio link and tells the reader what to look for when they click through.

02 Quantify the copy, not the hours

Name the test you ran, the metric it moved, and the channel: CTR lift on a paid social variant, open-rate change on a subject line test, or revenue from a landing page rewrite.

If you can’t get a percentage, use scope: pieces shipped per week, brands written for, or word-count ranges. A subject-line test that lifted open rate from 22% to 31% lands harder than ‘wrote engaging emails.’

03 Group your work by format and channel

Creative directors read for range. Cluster your bullets into three to five buckets that map to the job: long-form (blog, white papers, scripts), short-form (ads, social, push), lifecycle (email flows, SMS), conversion (landing pages, product pages), and brand (voice guides, naming, taglines).

Under each bucket, name the tools and methods: Figma for ad comps, Webflow for landing pages, Klaviyo or Iterable for email, and the testing platform you used. Concrete tools beat adjectives every time.

04 Put the portfolio link and tools where they get seen

Place a live portfolio URL in the header, next to your email. Add a one-line note on what’s behind the link: ’14 case studies across DTC and B2B SaaS’ beats a bare URL.

Build a tools row on page one covering writing and production stack (Google Docs, Notion, Figma), CMS and email platforms (Webflow, Contentful, Klaviyo), SEO tools (Ahrefs, Clearscope), and AI assistants you actually use. Creative directors and content managers need to see this early to route you to the right brief.

05 Show the transition if you're switching in

If you’re moving from journalism, PR, content marketing, or UX writing, name the bridge work up top. Spec ads, freelance landing pages, newsletter growth numbers, or a Substack with subscriber counts all count as proof.

Add a short ‘Selected writing’ block listing three or four pieces with the brand, format, and outcome. This gives a content manager something to evaluate before the formal employment history, which still reads as your prior field. If you are coming from journalism, see our journalist resume examples for ways to present that background.

Most Popular Skills on Copywriter Resumes for 2026

The skills below come from copywriter resumes our users built on ResumeTemplates.com. Creative directors and content managers scan dozens of resumes a week, and these are the skills that show up most often. Hard skills like SEO writing and A/B testing get you past the ATS keyword parse.

Soft skills like voice control and brief interpretation are what content leads evaluate during the portfolio read. Match the hard-skills list against the posting and use the soft skills as evidence claims your bullets back up with examples.

Soft Skills % of resumes with this skill
Creativity 76%
Attention to detail 58%
Communication 46%
Time management 37%
Collaboration 29%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills % of resumes with this skill
SEO writing 75%
Copy editing 57%
Content strategy 50%
WordPress (CMS) 40%
Keyword research 31%

Based on data from thousands of copywriters’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com, May 2026.

Must Have on a Copywriter Resume

Say which channels you write for, such as email or paid social.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

Creative directors and content managers expect copywriter resumes to name the channels and formats they actually hire for. Group the keywords below by the niche that matches your portfolio so the ATS parse and the human read both land cleanly.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
Conversion and direct response landing page copy, conversion copywriting, a/b testing, sales page copy
Lifecycle and email email copywriter, lifecycle marketing, drip campaigns, crm copy
SEO and content marketing seo copywriter, long-form content, blog writing, content strategy
Brand and advertising brand voice, taglines, ad copy, concept development
B2B and SaaS b2b copywriter, saas copywriter, white papers, case studies

AI Skills to Add

Brands are split between teams that want AI-assisted draft speed and teams that forbid generative copy in production. Name the tools you use, describe the workflow honestly, and don’t claim you ‘write with AI’ if your actual practice is prompting for research and editing the output to voice.

What AI is actually changing for this role
First drafts and variants

AI handles the first 10 ad variants or subject lines, freeing you to pick, edit, and test the strongest two or three.

Research and briefs

ChatGPT and Claude compress competitor scans and audience research, but the brief still needs a writer's interpretation to be useful.

Voice control

Generic AI output is the problem, not the tool. Voice guides, examples in the prompt, and heavy editing are now part of the job.

Fact-checking and citations

AI-generated claims need source verification before publishing. Editors expect the writer to own this step, not the model.

AI tools to name

  • ChatGPT: Used for outline drafts, variant generation, and brief research, with final voice and fact-check done by hand.
  • Claude: Used for long-form drafting, editing passes, and tone adjustments against a brand voice guide loaded into the prompt.
How to phrase AI on your resume
Do
  • Used ChatGPT to generate 12 subject-line variants per email; A/B tested top three and lifted open rate from 24% to 33%.
  • Built a Claude prompt library with brand voice guides for four DTC clients, cutting first-draft time by roughly 40%.
Skip
  • AI-powered copywriter delivering next-generation content at scale.
  • Leveraged AI to revolutionize the content creation process.

Portfolio Strategy

Your portfolio is the gate. The resume earns the click; the portfolio earns the interview. Build it like a sales page, not a clip archive.

Best overall Custom site (Webflow or Squarespace)

Full control of layout, voice, and case-study structure; signals craft to creative directors.

Best for fast setup Authory

Auto-imports published bylines, useful for content marketers and journalists transitioning in.

Best for agencies Contently

Common in agency hiring pipelines and easy to send as a single link with organized case studies.

Best for visual work Notion

Free, fast, and works for spec work or early-career writers who need to ship something this week.

Lead with three case studies, not 30 clips. Pick the work that matches the job you want. A DTC lifecycle role wants email flows; a B2B SaaS role wants landing pages and white papers.

Each case study needs the brief, the work, and the outcome. Two screenshots, a paragraph on the brand challenge, and the metric you moved beats a wall of body copy every time. If you don’t have a number, name the scope (audience size, channel, format).

Awards, Credits, and Published Work

A short awards-and-credits block tells creative directors which industry rooms have already vetted your work. Place it under your portfolio link on page one if the credits are strong, or below your employment history if the list is shorter.

  • One Show, Cannes Lions, D&AD, Andy Awards (advertising and brand)
  • ADDY Awards, Webby Awards (digital and regional)
  • Bylines in trade publications, brand blogs, and editorial sites
  • Published books, essays, or newsletters with subscriber counts over 1,000
  • Speaking credits at industry events (Litmus Live, Content Marketing World)

Copywriting Credentials That Get You the Job

A portfolio and a writing sample keep you eligible. The certifications below move a copywriter resume from the qualified-but-typical stack into a creative director’s shortlist, because they signal channel depth and measurable craft.

  • HubSpot Content Marketing Certification: Signals lifecycle, SEO, and editorial calendar fluency, which content managers at B2B and SaaS brands look for explicitly.
  • Google Analytics Certification: Tells a creative director you can read the dashboards behind your copy and connect bullets to conversion and traffic data.
  • Copyhackers Conversion Copywriting: Signals research-led, test-driven landing page work, which DTC and growth teams weight heavily during portfolio review.
  • SEMrush or Ahrefs SEO Certification: Shows you can pitch and write briefs for organic traffic, useful for content marketing and editorial roles with traffic targets.

Latest BLS Statistics for Copywriters

For copywriters, the 10th-percentile floor reflects entry roles at small agencies and in-house junior seats, while the top-decile ceiling reflects senior writers and creative directors at agencies, tech, and finance brands. That spread tells you industry, channel specialty, and tenure move a candidate from floor to ceiling more than location does.

Lead the resume with the channels you own (lifecycle, conversion, brand) and the industries you’ve written for, so a hiring lead can place you on that spread within a few seconds of opening the file.

Build My Resume

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write a copywriter resume with no professional experience?

Build a 'Selected writing' section above your employment history.

List three to five pieces with brand, format, and outcome, then link a portfolio with live samples.

Treat your retail or service job as the employment history and let the writing block carry the craft argument.

What should my portfolio link show by the time a creative director clicks it?

Show 8 to 14 case studies grouped by format: lifecycle email, landing pages, long-form, and brand.

Each case study needs the brief, two or three sample assets, and the outcome metric where you have one.

Avoid PDF dumps and Google Drive folders. Use Contently, Authory, or a custom site so navigation is fast and the work loads on mobile.

How do I describe AI use on a copywriter resume without hurting my chances?

Name the tools and the workflow. Write what you use AI for (research, outline drafts, variant generation) and what stays human (voice, final draft, fact-check).

Skip vague claims like 'AI-powered copywriter.' Some brands forbid generative tools in production copy.

An honest workflow line helps you self-select into the right roles.

Can I list copy I wrote on a team without taking sole credit?

Yes, and you should. Use 'Wrote' for solo work and 'Contributed copy to' or 'Wrote alongside a creative director on' for team work.

Name your specific deliverable: the subject lines, the hero block, the script outline.

Creative directors expect collaboration on bigger campaigns. Inflated solo credit gets caught during the portfolio walkthrough.

Which resume template works best for a copywriter?

A professional template handles a copywriter resume with a portfolio link and conversion numbers. An ATS-friendly template is worth a look as well.
