AI rewrote how general manager roles get filled, with hiring teams using automated tools to pre-sort candidates before a human opens your file. The roles themselves are still there: restaurant groups, retail chains, manufacturing plants, and hotels keep posting GM seats every week.

What thins the pile is P&L proof, the kind regional directors and ops VPs scan for first. Screening tools surface candidates who name revenue, margin, and unit-level wins in clear numbers. Show the dollars you moved, the teams you ran, and the results that held.

The examples below run from general manager to senior GM across restaurant, retail, and multi-unit operations. Use them to frame your P&L story the way the people signing the offer want to read it.

Tip !

The general manager resumes that get scheduled for panel rounds share three things: a profile naming unit count and revenue scope, year-over-year P&L deltas in the top two roles, and KPI bullets a regional director can verify in 30 seconds.

Why this resume works
  • Numbers tied to profit: The flagship bullet pairs revenue, headcount, and EBITDA movement, so a hiring manager sees scope and outcome in one line.
  • Grew into more responsibility: The Supervisor to AGM to GM arc makes the promotion path obvious without needing a summary to explain it.
  • Shows people leadership, not just operations: Calling out the leadership track and two AGM promotions proves the candidate develops staff, not only hits numbers.

General Manager Example

The general manager tab fits single-site operators running one P&L with full staffing, scheduling, and revenue accountability. This resume needs to prove unit-level revenue growth, labor and COGS control, and team retention under your watch.

Why this resume works
  • Retention number leads the page: Moving retention from 68% to 79% is the metric this industry cares about, and it sits in the first bullet.
  • Promotion from inside the same studio: Going from Assistant Manager to GM at one employer shows the company trusted her with more responsibility.
  • Real labor-hours win: The 22 hours per week recovered tells a hiring manager she can read a schedule and find waste.

Senior GM Example

The senior GM tab fits multi-unit or flagship operators reporting to a regional director or VP. This resume needs to prove portfolio P&L scope, leader-of-leaders span, and KPI gains rolled up across sites.

Why this resume works
  • Scope is clear in one line: The first bullet names stores, revenue, headcount, and direct reports, so executives know the level instantly.
  • Turnaround story with a timeframe: Moving two struggling stores to top quartile in 14 months proves regional impact, not just steady-state management.
  • Builds future leaders: The MIT program that fills three of four GM openings internally is exactly what a VP of Operations wants to read.

How to Write a General Manager Resume

01 Open with a profile that names your P&L scope

Your profile should state your years running a P&L, the unit count and annual revenue you’ve owned, and the segment you operate in (QSR, full-service restaurant, big-box retail, hotel, dealership, field service).

Name the size of your team and your direct-reports layer. A regional director reading the first six lines wants the operating scale before the story.

02 Quantify revenue, margin, and team

Aim for two or three metric types per role: revenue or same-store sales growth, EBITDA or four-wall margin movement, and a people metric like turnover or engagement.

Pair the metric with the lever you pulled. “Lifted same-store sales 9% by relaunching the catering channel” reads stronger than a percentage alone.

03 Group your work into operating categories

Sort bullets under each role into four buckets so the page reads like an operator’s scorecard. Use revenue and guest or customer experience, cost and margin, people and labor, and compliance and brand standards.

Inside each bucket, name the systems you ran: POS and inventory platforms like Toast, Aloha, or Oracle MICROS, labor tools like HotSchedules or 7shifts, and reporting stacks like Power BI or Tableau. Naming the system tells the reader you’ve owned the workflow, not just attended the meetings.

04 Place credentials and tools on page one

Put ServSafe Manager, TIPS, or your state alcohol certification in a short credentials line under your profile if your segment requires them. Regional directors and operations VPs want to see compliance coverage before they reach your work history.

Add a tools line naming your POS, scheduling, and inventory platforms in the same block. For hospitality, name your PMS (Opera, Mews). For retail, name your WFM and loss-prevention systems.

This keeps page two free for revenue and team bullets.

05 Cut what dilutes a senior read

Drop shift-level tasks like opening and closing checklists, cash drops, and weekly inventory counts. A general manager reader assumes those.

Cut soft-skill summaries and any role over 12 years old unless it carried P&L scope. Trim education to degree, school, and year. Use the recovered space for unit count, revenue growth, and the KPI gains a regional director can verify against your references.

Most Popular Skills on General Manager Resumes for 2026

The lists below come from our user-built general manager resumes, so the terms match what real operators put on the page. Regional directors and operations VPs scan for P&L ownership, labor model control, and POS or PMS fluency first, not generic leadership platitudes.

Soft skills only count when a bullet later proves them.

Soft Skills % of resumes with this skill
Leadership 74%
Communication 52%
Problem-solving 46%
Time management 38%
Conflict resolution 34%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills % of resumes with this skill
Profit and loss management 67%
Operations management 57%
Budgeting and forecasting 46%
Staff scheduling 37%
Performance data analysis 34%

Based on data from thousands of general managers’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com, May 2026.

Must Have on a General Manager Resume

The keyword table covers restaurant, retail, hotel, and plant management.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

Regional directors and operations VPs expect a niche keyword block that matches the segment they’re hiring for. Group your terms by sub-niche so the ATS parses each cleanly.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
Restaurant GM restaurant general manager, food cost control, ServSafe certified, POS systems
Multi-unit and district multi-unit general manager, district manager, area manager, same-store sales growth
Hotel and hospitality GM hotel general manager, Opera PMS, RevPAR, guest satisfaction scores
Retail GM retail general manager, shrink reduction, store operations, workforce scheduling
Operations and P&L leadership P&L management, EBITDA growth, labor cost management, KPI reporting

AI Skills to Add

What regional directors and operations VPs expect on a general manager resume has shifted: a bullet that says “used AI to improve operations” now reads as vague and risky; a bullet naming the workflow, the tool, and the P&L result reads as a real operator move.

What AI is actually changing for this role
Forecasting and labor

AI-driven demand forecasts in scheduling tools are reshaping how GMs build weekly labor against sales projections and weather.

Guest and customer feedback

Sentiment summaries from review platforms now feed weekly ops meetings, so GMs are expected to act on themes, not single reviews.

Inventory and waste

Vision-based and predictive inventory tools flag shrink and waste patterns earlier, shifting GM attention from counts to root cause.

Hiring and onboarding

AI screeners and chat-based applications are changing how GMs source hourly staff and how fast they can fill open shifts.

AI tools to name

  • ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot: Drafting schedules, manager logs, weekly P&L commentary, and coaching notes from raw POS exports.

  • AI features in your scheduling or POS stack: Demand forecasting and labor recommendations inside HotSchedules, 7shifts, Toast, or similar platforms.

How to phrase AI on your resume
Do
  • Used Copilot to summarize weekly POS and labor reports, cutting prep time for district reviews from four hours to one.
  • Adopted AI demand forecasts in 7shifts to rebuild the labor model, holding labor at 26% while lifting guest scores two points.
Skip
  • Leveraged AI to revolutionize restaurant operations.
  • AI-powered leader driving next-generation guest experience.

General Management Credentials That Get You the Job

Choose certifications relevant to the type of site you manage.

  • ServSafe Manager Certification: Standard for restaurant and food-service GMs; many states and brands require it for the GM of record, so list it on page one.
  • Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA): AHLEI credential that signals you're tracking toward hotel GM or area manager roles in full-service or select-service properties.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt: Reads as proof you can run throughput, waste, and cost projects, which matters for retail, field service, and manufacturing GM seats.
  • Certified Manager (CM) from ICPM: Cross-industry leadership credential useful for GMs moving between segments or stepping into multi-unit roles without an MBA.

Latest BLS Statistics for General Managers

General and operations manager is one of the larger occupations in BLS, which means the median pulls in a long tail of supervisory and small-business variants alongside true P&L owners. The spread between the 10th and 90th percentile is wide, and segment, unit count, and revenue scope drive most of it.

To position above the median, lead your resume with the revenue you’ve owned, the unit count under you, and the EBITDA or same-store gains you delivered, not the team you supervised.

$102,950 National median annual
$133,120 National mean annual
$47,420 Entry-tier floor (10th percentile)
$239,200 Top-decile ceiling (90th percentile)

Where you stand

Entry tier

$47,420 to $102,950 At the entry tier, lead with your single-unit P&L, ServSafe or segment certification, and the labor and COGS targets you hit.

Top decile

$239,200+ At the top decile, lead with multi-unit revenue scope, EBITDA growth, AGM bench you've built, and the regions or districts you've run.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I describe restaurant general manager work on a resume?

Open the role with one line of context: segment (QSR, fast casual, full service), annual unit revenue, seat or drive-thru count, and team size. That frames every bullet underneath.

Then write bullets around four metrics: same-store sales, food and labor cost percentages, guest scores, and turnover. Name the POS and scheduling platforms you ran, such as Toast, Aloha, or HotSchedules.

Close the role with one bullet on coaching outcomes, like AGMs or shift leaders you promoted into their next seat.

What's the right way to write a general manager summary?

Use three to four lines. Line one: years running a P&L plus segment. Line two: unit count, annual revenue, and team size you've owned. Line three: the operating theme you're known for, such as turnarounds, new openings, or labor model rebuilds. Line four (optional): the certification or system fluency that fits the target posting. Skip adjectives like results-driven. A regional director reads the scope, not the self-description.

How do I handle a general manager resume when my title was assistant general manager?

List the title as it appears on payroll, then use the bullets to show the GM-level work you carried: closing P&L responsibility, hiring decisions, weekly forecasts, or running the unit when the GM was off.

In the summary, say plainly that you're stepping into a general manager seat, and name the revenue scope and team size you ran day to day.

Misrepresenting the title gets caught in reference checks. The bullets are where you prove GM readiness.

Should I list every unit I've managed if I've moved around a lot?

If you ran several units under the same brand, list the employer once and add a sub-line for each unit with city, dates, and one to two bullets on the scope and result.

If the moves were across brands, keep each role separate but trim units older than 10 years to a one-line entry. Use the saved space for revenue and KPI bullets on your two most recent seats.

Regional directors care about pattern and outcome, not a complete address book.

Which resume template works best for a general manager?

Your P&L results and leadership record read clearly in a professional template. An ATS-friendly template is another choice.
