Automation now handles rate sheets, document chasing, and early underwriting passes. What lenders pay for is your judgment on borrower fit and your ability to close. The resumes that advance lead with funded volume and pull-through, not duties.

Screening usually starts with an ATS keyword scan, then a recruiter check on NMLS status and a branch manager interview on your pipeline. Show your NMLS ID and state licenses near the header, plus your product mix across conventional, FHA, VA, and jumbo, and the LOS you ran it in, like Encompass.

We reviewed thousands of loan officer postings and studied resumes that landed offers at strong lenders. The examples below run from entry-level to senior, covering mortgage, commercial, and consumer lending. Use them to build a resume that proves you fund loans and keep borrowers through closing.

Tip !

The loan officer resumes that get callbacks share three things: NMLS ID and licensed states sitting in the header, two to three years of funded volume and pull-through side by side, and a product mix that matches the posting.

Why this resume works

  • Numbers tied to real volume: Funded dollar volume, unit count, and rank within branch give a hiring manager an instant read on production.
  • Shows how the pipeline gets built: Naming referral partners and the 70% repeat-business figure proves the book travels with this LO, not the company.
  • Saved a deal others would lose: The low-appraisal restructure bullet shows problem-solving on a specific file, which is what branch managers actually hire for.

Entry Level Example

Entry-level originators are newly licensed or moving from processor, banker, or real estate roles into origination. Your resume needs to prove NMLS readiness, product knowledge, and the referral instincts that turn warm leads into applications.

Entry Level Example

Use This Template

Why this resume works

  • Has the license already: Calling out the NMLS number and first-attempt SAFE pass removes the biggest hiring risk for an entry LO role.
  • Real loan exposure before the title: Consumer loan applications and HELOC origination as a banker show the candidate has touched the work, not just studied it.
  • Promotion shows growth: Moving from teller to lead teller to personal banker in two years tells a manager this person earns the next seat.

Experienced Example

Experienced loan officers carry a two-to-five-year production history with consistent monthly funded units. Your resume needs to prove pull-through rate, product mix across conventional, FHA, and VA, and the referral partners feeding your pipeline.

Experienced Example

Why this resume works

  • Purchase mix matters to managers: Stating 81% purchase business signals durability in a high-rate environment, not just refi production that dries up.
  • Wins deals competitors skip: The DPA program bullet shows a niche that builds agent loyalty and pulls in business other LOs leave on the table.
  • Specific saves on tough files: Naming the DTI fix and product switch inside the contingency window proves underwriting fluency a senior role needs.

Senior Example

Senior loan officers and producing branch managers run their own book and often mentor junior originators. Your resume needs to prove multi-year volume rankings, jumbo or specialty product depth, and team or branch P&L contribution.

Why this resume works

  • Built a branch from nothing: Zero to $190M in three years is the kind of build a regional VP looks for when hiring a branch leader.
  • Still produces personally: $61M in personal volume while running 9 LOs proves this is a working manager, not someone who stopped originating.
  • Track record of growing other LOs: Six of nine recruited LOs producing above $25M each shows the candidate scales other people, not just themselves.

How to Write a Loan Officer Resume

01 Open with a profile that names your production scope

Your profile should state your years originating, the channel you work in, and your typical annual funded volume. Name the lender type: retail bank, credit union, independent mortgage bank, or broker shop.

Then name the product mix you run most: conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, jumbo, non-QM, or HELOC. Close with the states you hold active NMLS licensure in.

This four-sentence opener tells a branch manager whether your book and licensing match the posting before they read a single bullet.

02 Quantify funded volume and pull-through

Loan officer work is built for numbers, so lead bullets with them. Most strong resumes show three metrics: annual funded volume in dollars, units closed, and pull-through rate from application to funding.

Add average cycle time from lock to clear-to-close when it beats branch average. Name your purchase-to-refi split if it shifts the read.

A strong bullet pairs the metric with the lever: referral partner growth, product expansion, or a process change that lifted pull-through.

03 Group your work by loan lifecycle

Cluster bullets into three or four categories so a recruiter can scan them. Origination and pre-qualification covers borrower intake, credit pulls, DTI and LTV analysis, and product fit.

Pipeline management covers locks, disclosures, TRID timelines, and conditions clearing alongside processors and underwriters. Referral development covers Realtor, builder, CPA, and past-client channels with the volume each produces.

Compliance covers TRID, RESPA, ECOA, HMDA, and state-specific rules you operate under. This shape mirrors how branch managers think about an originator’s job.

04 Place credentials and tech high on page one

Your NMLS ID and the states you hold licenses in belong in the header block, right under your name. List the states only; do not publish license numbers on the resume itself.

Add a short credentials line for SAFE Act completion, continuing education status, and any CMB, AMP, or CRMP designation. Below that, list your LOS and tech stack: Encompass, Blend, Optimal Blue, ICE PPE, Salesforce, Total Expert, or Surefire.

Branch managers need licensure and LOS fluency visible in the first scan because both gate the interview.

05 Cut what the production numbers already prove

Senior originators tend to overstuff resumes with duties the volume already implies. Cut generic lines about customer service, building rapport, and explaining loan options to borrowers.

Cut training certificates older than five years and any pre-NMLS roles unrelated to lending, sales, or finance. Keep the production rankings, President’s Club or Chairman’s Circle awards, and any branch or team leadership.

A tight two-page resume that leads with funded volume, pull-through, and product mix outperforms a three-page duty list every time.

AI Skills to Add

Describe how you use AI in your loan workflow and which steps you verify before submitting.

What AI is actually changing for this role
Guideline lookup

AI-assisted search across agency and investor overlays cuts the time spent hunting for product-specific eligibility rules.

Borrower communication

Generative tools draft status updates, document request lists, and rate-lock explanations that you review and personalize before sending.

Pipeline forecasting

CRM-embedded AI scores leads and predicts pull-through so you spend time on files most likely to fund.

AI tools to name

  • Total Expert with embedded AI: Used to score leads, draft borrower nurture sequences, and trigger milestone communications across the pipeline.
  • ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot: Used to draft borrower explanations of complex products and summarize agency guideline updates for the desk.
How to phrase AI on your resume
Do
  • Used Total Expert AI scoring to prioritize 40 leads weekly, lifting application-to-funded pull-through from 62 to 71 percent.
  • Drafted borrower-facing rate-lock and condition explanations in Copilot, cutting average email turnaround from four hours to under one.
Skip
  • AI-powered mortgage originator transforming the borrower journey
  • Leveraging cutting-edge AI to revolutionize loan production

Financial Credentials That Carry Weight

Loan officer hiring rarely calls for the CPA or CFA path, but adjacent financial credentials still move the resume. List the credential, the issuing body, and the year earned in a credentials block beneath your licensure line.

  • Certified Mortgage Banker (CMB) from the Mortgage Bankers Association for senior production and leadership roles
  • Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP) for mid-career originators expanding into operations or sales management
  • Series 6 or Series 7 retained from a prior banking role when targeting bank-channel originator positions
  • Commercial lending coursework from RMA or ABA when applying to commercial or SBA-focused desks

Sales Methodology and Referral Development

Origination is a referral-driven sales role, so branch managers read for methodology as much as product knowledge. Name the partner channels you build, the cadence you run, and the conversion you produce.

  • Grew Realtor referral roster from 12 to 28 active agents, lifting purchase-volume share from 45 to 68 percent of annual funded units
  • Ran weekly co-branded open-house program with three builder accounts, generating 90 pre-quals and 41 funded loans annually
  • Built CPA and financial advisor referral channel sourcing jumbo and self-employed borrowers at an average loan size 2.1 times branch average
  • Maintained past-client database of 600 borrowers with quarterly equity-position touchpoints, producing 35 percent of annual refinance volume

Lending Credentials That Get You the Job

Beyond your active NMLS licensure and SAFE Act education, the certifications below tell branch managers and lending directors which products you can originate with depth and where your specialty sits.

  • Certified Mortgage Banker (CMB): Issued by the Mortgage Bankers Association.
  • Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP): Also issued by the Mortgage Bankers Association.
  • Certified Residential Mortgage Specialist (CRMS): NAMB's credential signals broker-channel expertise and is read as a quality marker by independent mortgage banks and brokerages.
  • Certified Reverse Mortgage Professional (CRMP): NRMLA's credential signals HECM specialty and is required-reading for officers targeting reverse mortgage desks at retail lenders.

Latest BLS Statistics for Loan Officers

The 90th-percentile loan officer out-earns the median by a wide margin, which tells you the market rewards funded volume and product specialty far more than years on the desk. Top earners cluster in jumbo, non-QM, and high-cost metros where average loan size carries the commission math.

Lead the resume with the volume bands and product mix the high-percentile tier actually closes, not with years licensed or generic origination duties.

$74,180 National median annual
$86,020 National mean annual

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I list NMLS licensure on a loan officer resume?

Place NMLS ID and your licensed states in the header under your name. List the state abbreviations only, not the individual license numbers.

Add SAFE Act completion and current continuing-education status on a short credentials line below. Branch managers screen for licensed-state fit before they read bullets, so this needs to sit on page one.

How do I write a loan officer resume with no origination experience?

Lead with NMLS readiness or active licensure, SAFE Act completion, and the product training you have done. List the LOS and CRM tools you have touched, even in a support role.

Translate adjacent work into origination signal. Processor, underwriter, banker, or Realtor experience all map to skills officers use daily, so quantify the files you touched and the borrowers you guided.

Where should I put a top-producer award on the resume?

Put President's Club, Chairman's Circle, or top-X percent rankings in a dedicated awards line directly under your profile. Name the year, the ranking, and the population you ranked against.

Repeat the award next to the relevant production year inside your experience section. This double placement helps a recruiter spot it on the first scan and a branch manager verify it in context.

Should I include funded volume from a rate-cycle slow year?

Yes, and frame it against the market. Show your funded volume next to the branch or national volume change for that year.

A flat year against a 40 percent market drop reads as resilience, not weakness. Branch managers know the cycle and respect officers who held production through it.

Which resume template works best for a loan officer?

A professional template helps you present funded volume and NMLS status on a loan officer resume. An ATS-friendly template is worth trying, too.
