Psychology hiring turns on fit for a setting, not a broad clinical label. A school contract, a VA rotation, and a private clinic each want different proof. Your resume should name the populations, the assessments, and the treatment models you actually use.

Lead with your license status, your degree, and your practicum or postdoc hours. Name your assessment batteries, your therapy modalities, and the EHRs you work in. Clinic directors and psychology department chairs screen for caseload volume, supervision hours, and outcome tracking.

The examples below show how to frame these details across school, clinical, and research roles. Use them to shape a resume that reads as a working psychologist, not a template.

Tip !

A clean license and degree block is what gets psychology resumes past the credentialing screen with clinic directors and psychology department chairs; concrete caseload numbers and named clinical modalities are what make them readable enough to advance.

Why this resume works

  • Real caseload numbers: Naming a weekly range of 28 to 32 clients tells a hiring clinic exactly what productivity to expect.
  • Fixed a wait-time problem: Cutting intake wait from 21 days to 9 shows operational thinking beyond individual therapy sessions.
  • Ready to supervise: Naming the practicum supervision workload signals this candidate can help train the next hire, not just carry a caseload.

Recent Graduate Example

You are a recent graduate finishing a doctoral program and starting supervised practice. Your resume has to prove clinical hours, assessment training, and progress toward a state psychologist license under a board-approved supervisor.

Why this resume works

  • Direct hours are named: Internship sites want to see logged direct client hours, and 320 is a concrete answer to that question.
  • Hands-on experience with named instruments: Naming WISC-V, WIAT-4, and BASC-3 shows the candidate has hands-on experience with the instruments, not just coursework.
  • Research and clinical mix: The lab work with the anxiety trial pairs well with the practicum caseload and matches what scientist-practitioner programs look for.

Mid Career Example

You are a mid career psychologist with a license in good standing and a defined clinical population. Your resume has to prove treatment outcomes, caseload size, and the specific therapies and assessments you use with each group.

Why this resume works

  • Weekly evaluation volume: Six to eight neuropsych evaluations per week is a number a hiring department can compare directly to their own staffing needs.
  • Report turnaround fix: Cutting turnaround from 22 days to 11 shows the candidate is not only clinically productive but also improves the workflow around them.
  • Specialty is clear: Adult attention and cognitive decline evaluations are named repeatedly, so a referring neurologist reading the resume knows immediately what to send over.

Senior Example

You are a senior psychologist who supervises trainees or leads a service line. Your resume has to prove program results, supervision of licensed and pre-license staff, and the clinical or research direction you set for the team.

Why this resume works

  • Runs a real department: Leading 14 clinicians and 2,400 active patients puts a concrete size on the leadership job.
  • Kept staff from leaving: Bringing turnover from 18 percent down to 7 percent is the kind of retention metric a health system executive cares about.
  • Grew the practice financially: The $1.8M revenue growth from payer renegotiation and new group tracks shows this is a clinician who can run a business line.

How to Write a Psychology Resume

01 Open with a profile that names your clinical scope

State your scope in three or four lines. Name your degree track (PhD or PsyD), your years of supervised practice, and the setting you have worked in. Common settings include community mental health, VA medical centers, university counseling, private group practice, and inpatient psychiatry.

Name the populations you treat, such as adults, adolescents, older adults, or couples. Name your primary treatment approaches, such as cognitive, behavioral, or psychodynamic therapy. Clinic directors and psychology department chairs read this block first to decide if your caseload matches theirs.

A profile that names setting, population, and approach reads as specific.

02 Quantify caseload, outcomes, and program reach

Name two or three concrete metrics per role. Weekly caseload is the most-scanned figure, so state it plainly, such as 22 to 28 clients per week.

Add measurement-based care data when you have it. Examples include mean symptom score reduction across a 12-week protocol, or percent of clients meeting treatment goals at discharge. Program work carries volume figures too.

Name group therapy attendance, workshop enrollment, or assessment battery turnaround time. Supervision counts as scope, so name the number of practicum students or postdoctoral fellows you oversee. Numbers give clinic directors and psychology department chairs a fast read on productivity and clinical range.

03 Group your work into clear clinical categories

Organize each role’s bullets under three to five categories so the reader can scan by function. Direct clinical care is the first category, covering intake, individual therapy, group therapy, and couples or family work. Psychological assessment is the second category, covering cognitive, personality, neuropsychological, and forensic batteries.

Consultation and treatment planning is the third, covering case conferences, medication consults with psychiatry, and multidisciplinary rounds. Supervision and training is the fourth, covering practicum students, interns, and postdoctoral fellows. Program development, research, or teaching can be the fifth when it applies to your track.

Grouping bullets this way keeps the resume out of a jargon wall. It also lets a reader match your work to an open caseload.

04 Place licensure and degrees in a page-one block

Clinic directors and psychology department chairs will not read past page one if licensure is unclear. Put a short credentials block under your profile, before the work history. Name the degree first, such as PhD or PsyD from an APA-accredited program, with the university and graduation year.

Name your state psychologist license next, with the state and license status, such as active and in good standing. List other states where you hold licensure, and note PSYPACT authority if you practice across state lines. Add EHR systems you use, such as Epic, Cerner, or TheraNest.

Standardized assessment tools you administer belong here too. Leave the license number itself off the resume.

05 Close with education, training, and continuing work

Your education section carries more weight in psychology than in most fields, so give it room near the end of page one or the top of page two. Name your doctoral program, dissertation title, and clinical concentration. List your predoctoral internship site and APA accreditation status.

Name your postdoctoral fellowship with the supervisor and clinical focus. Add masters and bachelors degrees with institution and year. A short continuing education section belongs after this, covering advanced training in trauma-focused care, group therapy, or specialty populations.

Name workshop hours when the training was formal. Professional memberships such as APA divisions, state psychological associations, or specialty boards close the page.

Most Popular Skills on Psychology Resumes for 2026

Warm compassion language alone will not move your resume forward. Hard skills prove you can run the work day to day. Think intake, assessment, treatment planning, and clean documentation that holds up on audit.

Soft skills like active listening carry weight when a bullet shows them in action. Pair each one with a real client outcome or a measurable change.

Mirror the exact phrasing from the ad, since parsers score literal matches. Swap synonyms for the posting’s chosen term when the meaning stays the same.

Review each item against the role level, since intake language differs across settings.

Soft Skills AI-estimated %
Empathy 67%
Active listening 66%
Communication 40%
Critical thinking 37%
Cultural competency 26%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills AI-estimated %
Psychological assessment 79%
Cognitive behavioral therapy 61%
Treatment planning 44%
Clinical interviewing 39%
Statistical analysis (SPSS) 32%

Skill names and rankings come from an AI model grounded in U.S. Department of Labor occupation data for psychologists, not from a count of psychologists’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com.

Must Have on a Psychology Resume

State your license status and clinical setting clearly.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

Clinic directors and psychology department chairs scan for setting and method. They want to see where you trained and what you did. The rows below sort the terms by the work they cover. Clinical rows point to therapy sessions and patient care. Assessment rows point to testing, scoring and written reports. Research rows point to lab work, coding data and study design. School and counseling rows point to student support and group work. Early career rows point to coursework, field hours and honors. Pick the rows that match your actual work history. Use the exact phrasing your site or program uses. Drop any term you cannot back up in an interview.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
Clinical practice therapy sessions, intake assessment, treatment planning
Psychological assessment test administration, score interpretation, written reports
Research methods SPSS, data coding, literature review
School psychology student support, behavior intervention, crisis counseling
Early career practicum hours, APA style, honors thesis

Psychology Credentials Worth Listing

Clinic directors and psychology department chairs read this list as a map of where your work is heading. The credentials below tell them which clinical, research, or applied track you have invested in. They also signal your billing scope and the client populations you can serve. A doctoral degree and a state license form the baseline for independent practice. Any added training you list beyond that points to a specialty focus. List each item with the issuing body and the year you earned it. Put your state next to the license line so reviewers can match it to the posting.

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology: Issued by an APA-accredited program and expected for research, academic, and many clinical roles.

  • State Psychologist License: Issued by the State Board of Psychology and required before you can practice independently in that state.

  • Doctor of Psychology: Issued by an APA-accredited program and preferred by employers hiring for direct clinical practice roles.

Latest BLS Statistics for Psychologists

The top-paying states for psychology work tend to be in low-supply markets and coastal regions with dense health systems. They are not the big Sun Belt metros most job seekers target first. The spread between the 10th and 90th percentiles is wide, wider than in most licensed health fields.

Entry-level clinicians sit well below the middle, and the top decile earns close to double the median. That gap tracks with setting, subspecialty and years since license more than with raw hours. If your license carries across state lines, your resume should put the states where you hold an active license up front.

Name the setting types you have worked in, and put your APA-accredited degree near the top.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should you list a psychology degree on your resume?

Write the full degree name, the university, and the graduation year on one line. For a bachelor of arts, write BA in Psychology, and for a bachelor of science, write BS in Psychology.

Add your APA-accredited doctoral program the same way, with the city and state of the school.

How do you describe psychology research experience on a resume?

Name the lab, the principal investigator, and the research question in the first line of the entry. Then list the methods you ran, such as structured interviews or SPSS analysis of survey data.

Clinic directors want to see what you measured and what the finding was, in plain terms.

How do you list a co-authored paper or poster on a psychology resume?

Create a publications section under education and use APA style for the citation. List every author in the order printed, the year, the title, and the journal or conference.

A poster at a regional conference counts too, and you label it Poster in the citation.

How should the skills section look on a psychology resume?

Group skills under two or three labels the clinic will search for, such as Assessment, Treatment Modalities, and Clinical Documentation. Under each label, name the specific tests, therapies, and reporting systems you have used in supervised work.

Avoid soft-skill words such as empathetic or compassionate, because every applicant claims those.

How do you list a psychology license on your resume?

Put a Licensure line at the top of page one, above education, so the reviewer sees it first. Write the license name, the issuing state board, and the phrase in good standing.

Do not print the license number itself on a public resume, because that invites fraud.

How do you write a resume for a psychology graduate with no paid clinical hours yet?

Lead with a two-line summary that names your degree, your track, and the population you want to serve. Use a Practicum and Research section in place of a paid work section, and describe supervised hours the way you would a job.

Department chairs read these as real experience when you name the site, the supervisor, and your caseload.

How should you present a psychology resume when your license is from another state?

Name the state that issued your license and add a short line saying you have applied for reciprocity in the hiring state. Give the date you filed and the expected review window from the receiving board.

Clinic directors need this on the page, because hiring is often paused until the second license posts.

What's the best resume template for a psychologist?

A professional template gives your licensure and caseload figures a clear layout on page one. An ATS-friendly template is a straightforward choice for clinical roles.
