School counselor roles now sit at the center of student mental health work, tiered MTSS support, and college and career planning. Your resume has to show you can carry a full caseload and still track outcomes by data point, not by vibe.

School counselor postings call for a current state license, an M.Ed. in school counseling, and clear proof of ASCA-aligned practice. Name the student information system you use, the SEL curriculum you have run, and the crisis protocols you have led.

The examples below show how to frame caseload size, group counseling wins, and graduation or FAFSA gains in plain numbers. Use them as a starting point, then swap in your own schools, grade bands, and results.

Tip !

Directors of student services and school principals scan the first page for caseload size, grade band, and measurable student outcomes, because those numbers show whether a school counselor can carry a full building without escalation.

Why this resume works

  • Real caseload size: Naming a 318-student caseload tells hiring principals exactly what workload she is used to carrying.
  • One clear outcome number: The FAFSA jump from 61% to 84% is a specific, verifiable result tied to a change she made in the counseling calendar.
  • Bilingual work shown, not just claimed: Spanish shows up in the actual duties (translating 504 meetings, running family nights), not only as a line in the skills list.

School Counselor Example

This resume is for a new school counselor with a state license and an M.Ed. in school counseling. It has to prove supervised practicum hours, classroom lesson delivery, and comfort with student data systems.

Why this resume works

  • Internship hours are stated: 620 practicum hours signals she meets state licensure requirements and has real supervised experience.
  • Concrete curriculum named: Second Step is one of the actual programs elementary buildings use, so principals can picture the lessons.
  • License and issue year up front: Listing the State School Counselor License with the year removes the number-one hiring question for a first-year candidate.

Lead Counselor Example

A lead counselor resume shows several years of caseload work plus real influence over how a counseling department runs. It has to prove program design, mentoring of newer counselors, and measurable gains in attendance or graduation rates.

Why this resume works

  • Team size is spelled out: Leading four counselors and a registrar over 1,640 students gives a clear picture of the span she can supervise.
  • Program growth with real numbers: Dual-credit enrollment growing from 74 to 226 shows a concrete outcome, not a vague claim about ‘expanding programs.’
  • Career arc points to the role: Counselor to lead counselor with each job scoping up in caseload and responsibility reads as a natural fit for a lead posting.

Director of Student Services Example

A director of student services resume shifts the story from one school to a district view of counseling and student support. It has to prove budget ownership, staff supervision, and reporting to principals and the school board.

Why this resume works

  • Scope is stated in one sentence: 62 counselors across 14 schools, 11,200 students, and a $6.8M budget answers the scope question a superintendent asks first.
  • Compliance work shown with a result: Closing 9 of 9 open 504 findings in one year is the kind of concrete audit outcome districts hire directors to deliver.
  • Career arc from counselor to director: Every role scales up (counselor, lead, coordinator, director), which shows the leadership progression a cabinet-level hire expects.

How to Write a School Counselor Resume

01 Open with what a license lookup will not show

Start with the one line a principal cannot pull from your state license record. Name the grade band you have carried, the caseload size, and one specialty. Trauma-informed care, Naviance college advising, bilingual counseling in Spanish, and 504 or IEP fluency all read as differentiators.

If you led a suicide risk protocol or a restorative practices rollout, put that in the summary. A state license tells a director you are eligible. Your opener has to tell them why your file moves to the interview pile.

Keep it to two or three lines above the fold. One concrete program you built beats three lines of adjectives about student wellbeing.

02 Turn caseload work into scope and volume

Counseling bullets read as duties when they carry no scope. A strong bullet names caseload size, grade band, and one outcome the school tracks. Write “managed a caseload of 340 students across grades 9 through 12” instead of “supported students.” Name the college application volume you shepherded, the number of 504 plans you monitored, or the crisis referrals you handled in a year.

Attendance recovery, graduation rate movement, and FAFSA completion percentages all belong here when your school measured them. Where hard numbers do not exist, use volume language: “weekly small groups for 40 students,” “three feeder middle schools.” Bullets without any figure tend to read as job description copy that any licensed counselor could have written.

03 Group your work into four counseling categories

Directors of student services and school principals scan for coverage across four buckets. Sort your bullets under academic advising, social and emotional counseling, college and career readiness, and crisis response. Under academic, name credit checks, schedule building, and MTSS or RTI participation.

Under social and emotional, name individual sessions, small groups, and the referral network you built with outside clinicians. Under college and career, name transcripts, letters of recommendation written per year, Naviance use, and financial aid nights. Under crisis, name suicide risk assessments, mandated reporting, threat assessment teams, and reentry meetings.

This grouping signals that you can carry a full comprehensive program, not only the piece you liked best in your last role.

04 Place credentials and tools on page one

Put your State School Counselor License and your Master of Education in School Counseling in a credentials block near the top. Name the issuing state and write “in good standing” rather than publishing a license number. If you hold the National Certified School Counselor credential from NBCC, list it in the same block.

Directors of student services and school principals verify licensure before they read bullets, so burying it on page two costs you interviews. Add a short tools line for Naviance, PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, or the student information system your district used. Note bilingual counseling ability and any trauma-informed or restorative practices training here.

Keep the block scannable in four or five lines.

05 Close with education and a clean footer

End with your Master of Education in School Counseling, the issuing university, and the year if you graduated within the last decade. Add your undergraduate degree on one line beneath it. If your program included a CACREP-accredited track or a 600-hour internship in a specific setting, name it in one line.

New counselors should list practicum sites, grade bands, and supervising counselors by title rather than by name. Add continuing education in suicide prevention, threat assessment, or college advising in a short list. Cut the hobbies list, a photo, and your complete mailing address.

City and state, one phone line, one email, and a LinkedIn URL are enough. A clean footer signals the same care you bring to student files.

Most Popular Skills on School Counselor Resumes for 2026

Directors of student services and school principals read dozens of school counselor resumes each posting cycle. They scan for the terms that match the job description before they read a single bullet. The two tables below show the hard and soft skills that appear most often on strong resumes for this role.

Use the hard skills list as a keyword check against the posting you want. If the posting names small-group counseling or crisis response, those exact phrases belong on your resume. Directors weigh hard skills first because they signal training and license fit for the caseload.

Soft skills like empathy and active listening are read as evidence, not as claims on their own. Back each soft skill with a bullet that shows a student outcome or a family meeting you led. Do not paste the whole list into a skills block.

Pick the six or seven terms that match the posting and the grade band. Move the rest into bullets under your work history where you can show them in context.

Soft Skills AI-estimated %
Active listening 70%
Empathy under pressure 63%
Parent communication 50%
Behavioral awareness 38%
Cross-agency collaboration 27%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills AI-estimated %
Student records management 65%
Academic advising 62%
Crisis intervention 45%
Transcript evaluation 39%
College entrance planning 28%

Skill names and rankings come from an AI model grounded in U.S. Department of Labor occupation data for school counselors, not from a count of school counselors’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com.

Must Have on a School Counselor Resume

Your license and caseload size should be easy to find on the page.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

Directors of student services and school principals scan for the work you actually do. The keyword pass runs before a human ever reads your resume. Group your terms by the corner of counseling you cover. College and career planning is one lane. Crisis response and mental health support is another. Academic advising covers scheduling, transcripts and graduation checks. Data work covers your student information system and reporting. Program design covers ASCA alignment, tier one lessons and small groups. Name the caseload size you carried at each school. Name the grade band you served. Name the frameworks your district uses by their real names. Short, exact terms beat long descriptive phrases here.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
College and career Naviance, FAFSA completion, transcript review
Crisis and mental health suicide risk assessment, Tier 3 support, crisis intervention
MTSS and data MTSS, PowerSchool, attendance intervention
Program and framework ASCA National Model, small group counseling, SEL curriculum
Compliance and IEP 504 plans, IEP meetings, FERPA

School Counseling Credentials Worth Listing

Directors of student services and school principals read this list as a map of where your work is heading. The credentials below tell them which track you have invested in, from core school counseling practice to national-level standing. One item covers the state license you need to work at all. Another covers the graduate degree that most postings expect. A third covers voluntary national certification that signals a higher tier of practice. List each item with the issuing body and the year you earned or renewed it. Put the state next to the license so reviewers can match it to the posting. Keep the format the same for every line.

  • State School Counselor License: Issued by your State Department of Education and required by public schools before you can start in the role.
  • Master of Education in School Counseling: Issued by an accredited university and expected by most districts as the baseline degree for the role.
  • National Certified School Counselor: Issued by NBCC and used by some districts as a signal of advanced practice beyond the state license.

Latest BLS Statistics for School Counselors

For School Counselors, the 10th-percentile floor sits well below the median and the top-decile ceiling stretches far above it. The spread is wide at the top and tighter at the bottom, and national employment in the role is large. That shape points to a field where entry pay clusters near the license floor and the ceiling opens up with tenure, setting and added credentials.

Read the floor as the first-license rate and the ceiling as what long-tenured counselors reach in higher-paying districts. Directors of student services and school principals hire against that spread. Position your resume to the band you are targeting, and lead with the credential, caseload and setting that match it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should you write the license line on a school counselor resume?

Put the license on its own line in a credentials block near the top of page one. Name the credential, name the state department of education that issued it, and add the status.

Write it as "State School Counselor License, Ohio Department of Education, in good standing."

How do you list after-school program work on a school counselor resume?

List it as its own role under experience, with the program name, your title, and the dates worked.

Use a title a principal will recognize, such as After-School Program Counselor or Site Coordinator. Then show caseload size, grade levels served, and one referral or behavior outcome you tracked.

Should a resume from a school district applicant include a helping-students summary?

Yes, but keep it to two sentences and make it about scope and outcomes, not traits.

Name the grade band you serve, the caseload size, and one program you led, such as a college and career night. Directors of student services skim summaries for scope before reading bullets, so lead with numbers.

What belongs in the skills section of a school counselor resume?

Name the frameworks and platforms a principal expects to see, not soft traits like empathy or compassion.

Include the ASCA National Model, MTSS, PowerSchool or Infinite Campus, Naviance, and 504 plan support. Group them under two labels such as Counseling Frameworks and Student Information Systems so an ATS parses each cleanly.

Should mental health counselor experience go on a school counselor resume?

Yes, if you worked with school-age clients or ran groups a school runs too, such as grief or social skills.

Keep the clinical role on the resume but rewrite its bullets around student outcomes, referrals to outside providers, and family communication. Move adult-only caseload work to a single line so the school-relevant work reads first.

How do you show the ASCA National Model on your resume without sounding generic?

Do not just name it in the skills list and leave it there.

Tie it to one thing you built under the model, such as a tiered intervention plan for eighth grade transitions or a classroom lesson series on digital citizenship. Directors of student services want to see that you used the model to design something, not that you can spell it.

Should you list the college and career work you did with your students?

Yes, and use numbers a principal can compare against last year's counselor at the same school.

Show how many seniors you met with one-on-one, how many financial aid nights you ran, and the FAFSA completion rate for your caseload. If you have a scholarship dollar total for your students, that is one of the strongest lines on the page.

What's the best resume template for a school counselor?

An ATS-friendly template keeps your school counseling credentials and caseload numbers together. A basic template is a fine choice for a counseling resume.
