Generative AI has landed in student teaching. Tools like MagicSchool AI and Khanmigo now draft lesson plans, differentiate tasks, and write parent updates that mentor teachers expect you to refine. Employers are still hiring, so the real hurdle is standing out from the stack of candidates on a principal's desk.

More often than not, your resume gets a keyword scan in the district ATS, then a quick read from HR. From there, it lands with a principal and the cooperating teacher who mentored you. To clear that path, show standards-aligned lesson planning, the grade levels and subjects you taught, and measurable student gains tied to your placement hours.

We studied thousands of student teacher postings, interviewed principals, and reviewed resumes that earned offers in competitive districts. Whether you're targeting an elementary, secondary content-area, or special education role, the examples below span early-career placements through second-year hires. They help you turn your practicum into a hireable story.

Tip !

A clean license and endorsement line is what gets student teacher resumes past the district application portal; specific grade-band and standards-aligned unit detail is what makes them readable enough for a principal to schedule a demo lesson.

Why this resume works

  • Real classroom data, not just lesson titles: The fractions unit bullet shows pre- and post-test growth from 11 to 19 proficient students, the kind of evidence principals actually look for.
  • Shows growth across three placements: The arc from camp counselor to 2nd-grade practicum to lead 4th-grade student teacher tells hiring committees this candidate has built up to running a classroom.
  • Names specific frameworks and tools: Mentioning Heggerty, Danielson, Responsive Classroom, and CCSS 4.NF signals fluency with the language districts use in interviews.

Why this resume works

  • Caseload numbers make the scope clear: Saying 132 students across five sections tells a principal exactly what kind of teaching load this candidate has carried.
  • Before-and-after assessment results: The jump from 64% to 78% on the linear functions common assessment shows the redesign actually moved student learning.
  • Tutoring history backs up the teaching: Two years tutoring with strong feedback scores signals this candidate already knew how to explain math before the student teaching placement started.

How to Write a Student Teacher Resume

01 Open with what a license lookup doesn't show

Add one line a principal cannot pull from a state credential check. That might be a dual endorsement, a bilingual classroom placement, or a Title I host school.

Other strong openers: a co-taught inclusion model with a special education partner, a 1:1 device rollout you supported, or a workshop-model literacy block you ran solo for six weeks. Name the grade band and subject in the same line so the principal knows which posting you fit before they read further.

02 Translate placement work into scope numbers

Student teaching does not lend itself to revenue metrics, so use volume and scope. Name class size, number of sections, IEP and 504 counts, and weeks of full takeover.

Most strong bullets pair a verb with a scope number and a standard. Try writing “planned and delivered 24 standards-aligned lessons across three sections of seventh-grade ELA, serving 78 students including 11 with IEPs.”

03 Group placement work by deliverable category

Sort your bullets into three or four buckets so principals can scan for fit. Useful categories: lesson planning and standards alignment, classroom management and routines, assessment and data, and family or co-teacher communication.

Under planning, name the framework (workshop model, 5E, gradual release) and the standard set (Common Core, NGSS, state-specific). Under assessment, name the tools you used for formative checks and the data you brought to PLC meetings.

04 Place license and endorsements on page one

Put a credentials block under your name with state, license type, endorsements, and expected or earned date. Principals and HR coordinators check this before reading bullets, and missing it sends the resume to the bottom of the pile.

List the state and the license status (in progress, issued, or pending) without the license number. Add Praxis or state-specific exam passes by subject area, your edTPA score if strong, and any CPR or mandated reporter training the district requires.

05 Close with education and clinical hours

End with your degree, certifying program, and clinical hours logged. Principals want to see the host school, grade and subject, cooperating teacher, and the number of full-takeover weeks.

If you did a practicum before student teaching, include it as a separate line with hours and grade band. Add coursework only when it maps to a posted need (literacy methods for a reading opening, sheltered instruction for an ELL classroom).

Most Popular Skills on Student Teacher Resumes for 2026

The skills below come from student teacher resumes our users built on ResumeTemplates.com. Principals and district HR coordinators scan dozens of resumes a week, and these are the skills that show up most often. Hard skills like lesson planning and IEP accommodations carry the credentialing screen.

Soft skills like classroom management belong in your bullets as evidence, not as a list. Match this against the posting you want, and use soft skills to back specific moments from your placement.

Soft Skills % of resumes with this skill
Communication 70%
Patience 67%
Adaptability 40%
Problem-solving 36%
Collaboration 32%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills % of resumes with this skill
Classroom management 70%
Lesson planning 52%
Curriculum development 49%
Student assessment 39%
Educational technology 28%

Based on data from thousands of student teachers’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com, May 2026.

Must Have on a Student Teacher Resume

A student teacher resume needs your license status, endorsements, and exam passes.

Licensure Requirements

The items below are the ones to list in the credentials block.

Page-one placement, no license numbers

List the state, license type, grade band, and status. Use “in progress,” “pending issuance,” or “issued” with the expected or earned date.

Districts will request your license number on the application form, and posting the number publicly creates a credential-fraud risk your state board warns against.

  • State and license type (for example, Illinois Professional Educator License, Elementary Education 1-6).
  • Endorsements and added subjects (ESL, bilingual, special education, middle grades content).
  • Exam passes by subject area (Praxis, edTPA, or state-specific exams), with dates.
  • Mandated trainings the district requires (mandated reporter, CPR and first aid, child abuse recognition), with current dates.

Classroom Management

Principals read this section to predict your first month in an independent classroom. Name the system you used, the population you served, and the data you tracked, not your philosophy.

  • Ran a daily morning meeting and workshop-model literacy block for 24 second graders, including 4 with IEPs and 2 with 504 plans.
  • Co-planned accommodations with the resource teacher for a student with a reading IEP, using leveled texts and extended time on weekly assessments.
  • Used a CHAMPS-aligned classroom routine adopted by the host school, tracking on-task data with the cooperating teacher across a 6-week takeover.
  • Led restorative conversations after peer conflicts, documenting outcomes for the grade-level team and the school counselor.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

Group these by the sub-area of your placement that matches the posting. Principals and district HR coordinators expect to see grade-band, subject, and population terms in the exact wording the posting uses.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
Clinical placement student teaching, full-takeover weeks, cooperating teacher, university supervisor
Lesson design standards-aligned lesson planning, common core, ngss, gradual release
Classroom management classroom routines, restorative practices, positive behavior supports, de-escalation
Assessment and data formative assessment, exit tickets, data-driven instruction, plc
Diverse learners iep accommodations, 504 plans, ell instruction, differentiated instruction

AI Skills to Add

Principals are split between schools piloting tools like MagicSchool AI for lesson drafting and schools that restrict generative tools in front of students. Name the tools you use, describe the workflow honestly, and don’t claim you “teach with AI” if your actual practice is drafting lesson scaffolds and rubrics on your own time.

What AI is actually changing for this role
Lesson planning

Teachers are using AI to draft warm-ups, exit tickets, and differentiated versions of the same task, then editing for standards fit.

Rubric and feedback writing

AI speeds up rubric drafting and first-pass written feedback on student work, but the teacher still owns calibration.

Family communication

Translation tools and AI drafts help send home updates in families' home languages without waiting on a district translator.

Student-facing use

Khanmigo and similar tools show up in math and reading practice, with the teacher monitoring prompts and outputs in real time.

AI tools to name

  • MagicSchool AI: Drafting lesson plans, rubrics, IEP-aligned accommodations, and parent communication letters.
  • Khanmigo: Student-facing tutoring in math and reading with teacher-monitored prompts and progress checks.
How to phrase AI on your resume
Do
  • Used MagicSchool AI to draft tiered exit tickets for a mixed-ability seventh-grade ELA section, then revised for Common Core alignment before delivery.
  • Piloted Khanmigo as a math practice station for 22 fifth graders, reviewing student prompts weekly and adjusting guardrails with the cooperating teacher.
Skip
  • AI-powered educator transforming classroom outcomes
  • Leveraged generative AI to revolutionize lesson delivery

Student Teaching Credentials That Get You the Job

Beyond your state teaching license and program completion, the certifications below tell principals which student populations you can serve and how prepared you are for the daily realities of a classroom. List the certifying body, the date earned, and the expiration where one applies.

  • ESL or ELL endorsement: Signals you can serve multilingual learners without a co-teacher, which opens roles in districts where every classroom now has ELL students.
  • Special education endorsement or coursework: Tells principals you can co-teach in inclusion settings and write or follow IEP accommodations without leaning on the resource teacher.
  • Orton-Gillingham or LETRS training: Strong signal for elementary literacy openings in states that have adopted science of reading legislation since 2022.
  • CPR, first aid, and mandated reporter training: Required by many districts before day one, so listing current dates removes a hiring-side task from the onboarding checklist.

Latest BLS Statistics for Student Teachers

Kindergarten and elementary teaching is one of the larger occupations in BLS, which means the median pulls in a long tail of variants across grade bands, subjects, and school types. Student teachers enter at the floor of that distribution, so positioning is about the next step, not the median.

To position above the floor, lead the resume with your endorsement mix, the standards you taught against, and the host school’s demographic profile rather than the general fact of completing student teaching.

$62,340 National median annual
$69,790 National mean annual
$46,440 Entry-tier floor (10th percentile)

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I put student teaching on my resume?

Yes, and it should anchor your experience section if you have not held a full-time teaching contract yet.

List it under Experience, not Education. Include the host school, grade and subject, dates, and hours logged.

How do I describe student teaching in bullet points?

Use a verb, a scope number, and the standard or framework.

Example: planned and taught 18 NGSS-aligned lessons across two sections of eighth-grade science, serving 54 students including 9 with IEPs.

Counts of lessons and students help principals judge your classroom experience.

Can I include practicum experience alongside student teaching?

Yes, list practicum as a separate line under Clinical Experience with hours, grade band, and host school.

It shows progression from observation to co-teaching to full takeover, which principals read as readiness for an independent classroom.

How do I list my license if it is still in progress?

Write the state, license type, and status in your credentials block. You might write "Texas Standard Teaching Certificate, EC-6 Core Subjects, pending issuance, expected July 2026."

Add your endorsement areas and exam pass dates in the same block.

What resume template should a student teacher use?

A professional template organizes your student-teaching hours and coursework in a polished format. An ATS-friendly template is worth considering.
