Every resume example is written and reviewed by our team of Certified Professional Resume Writers to ensure top-quality content and formatting.

Editors and content directors now expect you to draft with ChatGPT or Claude in the loop, then sharpen the output into something publishable. The bylines exist at agencies, newsrooms, brand studios, and in-house content teams; the trouble is a slush pile that buries anyone without proof.

Most portfolio links get a quick scan before anyone reads your prose. Show bylines with traffic or retention numbers, the CMS you ship in, and your AP or Chicago fluency.

The examples below span emerging to senior writers and help you prove range, beat depth, and the deadline rhythm editors hire on.

Tip !

A portfolio of clicked-on bylines is what gets writer resumes past the editor's first read; specific traffic and retention numbers next to each clip are what make them readable enough to move to a writing test.

Why this resume works
  • Writes for a real audience size: Naming the 184,300-reader newsletter and open-rate range shows the work has scale and measurable impact, not just a list of bylines.
  • Shows range across formats: Long-form features, brand SKU copy, and back-of-book blurbs prove she can shift register, which is what editors and content leads actually hire for.
  • One sharp before-and-after number: The welcome-series CTR moving from about 2% to 5.3% is a concrete improvement tied to her own testing, which beats vague ‘boosted engagement’ claims.

Emerging Example

The emerging writer has a handful of published clips, maybe a student paper or a content internship, and is targeting junior staff or associate editor roles. This resume needs to prove range across formats and a working grasp of CMS and house style.

Why this resume works
  • Real bylines, named outlets: Listing actual regional publications and a count of 38 pieces tells a hiring editor exactly what they would see if they searched her name.
  • Shows she understands the pitch process: Tracking accepted versus killed ideas signals she knows freelance writing is a sales job, not just a writing job.
  • Broke a story that traveled: The housing maintenance scoop being picked up by TV stations is the kind of clip that gets an early-career writer past a resume screen.

Established Example

The established writer has 3 to 7 years of bylines, owns a beat or content vertical, and writes to traffic or engagement targets. This resume needs to show repeatable reach metrics, source networks, and fluency with SEO briefs and editorial calendars.

Why this resume works
  • Picked a beat and stayed: Five years in logistics gives her a domain that hiring managers can vet and clients will pay a premium for.
  • Content that drove leads, not just clicks: The 2,847-download benchmark report ties her writing to a number the sales team cares about, which is rare in writer resumes.
  • Manages other writers now: Owning a calendar, assignments, edits, and freelancer invoices signals she is ready for a senior or lead title.

Senior Example

The senior writer leads features, edits junior staff, or runs a content franchise across channels. This resume needs to show franchise growth, the writers and freelancers managed, and the audience or revenue numbers tied to the work.

Why this resume works
  • Published work with recognition: A 240-page field guide that sold through 12,000 copies and a Beard finalist feature show the level of work, not just the years.
  • Built a team, did not just join one: Hiring a senior writer, video producer, and managing editor at Foglight & Field signals he can run editorial as a function, not only contribute to it.
  • Willing to stop a project that was not working: Naming the $180,000 podcast pilot he ended is the kind of judgment call senior editors are actually hired to make.

How to Write a Writer Resume

01 Open with the one thing an editor cannot find elsewhere

Lead with the signal another writer is unlikely to have. That might be a beat with built-in source access, like municipal courts or vertical SaaS.

It might be a format mix a generalist cannot fake, such as longform features plus SEO service pages plus scripts. Or a publication tier, like a top-50 trade title or a national consumer brand.

Put that line at the top of your summary, name the publication or beat by its real name, and pair it with one engagement or reach figure. Editors and content directors decide in seconds whether to click your portfolio link.

02 Quantify reach, volume, and turnaround

Strong bullets carry a reach figure, a volume figure, or a deadline record.

For each role, pick a metric or two: pageviews for a flagship piece or articles shipped per month.

Use the units the publication uses. If your CMS reports unique visitors, write unique visitors. Vague phrases like ‘high-performing content’ tend to get cut on the editor’s second pass.

03 Group your work by format and audience

Editors scan for the formats they hire for. Cluster your bullets so they can find them fast: longform features, news and reported pieces, SEO and evergreen content, brand and B2B work, scripts and audio, newsletters.

Within each cluster, name the publication or client, the CMS, and the style guide (AP or Chicago). Add the editor relationship if you owned the pitch-to-publish cycle.

Three to five clusters per role is enough. More fragments the read.

04 Place tools, style, and bylines on page one

Editors and content directors want to confirm fit in the first scan. Put a credentials line on page one with CMS systems (WordPress, Contentful, Sanity), SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Clearscope), AP or Chicago fluency, and any specialist software like Adobe InCopy.

Add a ‘Selected Bylines’ block with 4 to 6 links to live pieces. Pick the clips that match the target job, not your personal favorites.

Bylines on page one cut the time between scan and portfolio click.

05 Frame a career change with proof of clips

If you are moving into writing from another field, the resume has to lead with published work, not intent. Open with a portfolio link and 4 to 6 clips above the work history.

Translate prior roles into writing-adjacent signals: research, interviewing, editing internal docs, running a Substack with subscriber numbers.

Name any freelance bylines, even small trade titles, by publication. Editors trust a small clip on a real masthead more than a long pitch about transferable skills.

Most Popular Skills on Writer Resumes for 2026

The skills below come from writer resumes our users built on ResumeTemplates.com. Editors and content directors scan dozens of resumes a week, and these are the terms that show up most often. Hard skills carry most of the ATS weight for writer roles: CMS names, SEO tools, and style guides parse cleanly.

Soft skills like source development matter, but only when a bullet backs them.

Soft Skills % of resumes with this skill
Written Communication 67%
Creativity 59%
Attention to Detail 49%
Time management 37%
Adaptability 31%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills % of resumes with this skill
Copyediting and Proofreading 65%
SEO Writing 61%
Content Management Systems 46%
Research and Fact-Checking 38%
AP Style 26%

Based on data from thousands of writers’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com, May 2026.

Must Have on a Writer Resume

Check the niche keywords for the kind of writing you do.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

Editors and content directors expect the niche line to read like the postings they write. Cluster your keywords by sub-specialty so the ATS picks up the format match and the human reader sees focus.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
Staff and editorial writer writer resume, writer resume sample, writer resume example, staff writer
Resume and career writing resume writer resume, resume writer, professional resume writer, resume writing
Content and SEO writer content writer, SEO writer, content marketing writer, blog writer
Copywriter and brand copywriter, brand copywriter, B2B copywriter, conversion copywriter
Author and longform author resume, freelance writer, longform feature writer, ghostwriter

AI Skills to Add

Editors are split between newsrooms and brand teams that want AI-assisted research and draft speed, and outlets that explicitly forbid generative tools in published copy. Name the tools you use, describe the workflow in plain terms, and avoid claiming you ‘write with AI’ when your real practice is editing and verifying.

What AI is actually changing for this role
Research and outlining

Writers use ChatGPT and Claude to summarize source documents, build outlines, and pressure-test angles before drafting.

SEO briefs

Clearscope and Semrush AI features now generate brief skeletons, leaving the writer to verify search intent and add reporting.

Fact-checking pressure

Editors expect tighter verification because generative drafts introduce confident errors that pass a casual read.

Volume expectations

Content teams have raised throughput targets, and writers are expected to show a defensible verification step in their process.

AI tools to name

  • ChatGPT: Used for outline generation, source synthesis, and rewriting passages for tone or length before manual editing.
  • Claude: Used for long-document summarization, interview transcript analysis, and structured drafts that the writer reports out and verifies.
How to phrase AI on your resume
Do
  • Used ChatGPT to outline and stress-test angles on 40+ longform features; verified all sourcing manually before submission.
  • Built Claude prompts to summarize 60-page reports into reporter briefs, cutting research time per feature by a third.
Skip
  • AI-powered storyteller crafting next-generation content at scale.
  • Leveraged generative AI to revolutionize editorial workflows.

Portfolio Strategy

A writer’s portfolio is the actual gate. Editors click before they read, so the link in your header has to land on a clean page with your strongest 6 to 10 clips, organized by format or beat, with a one-line context note next to each piece.

Best for staff and editorial Personal site (Ghost, Squarespace, or static)

Full control over layout, custom domain, and the order clips appear in.

Best for fast setup Contently

Pulls bylines automatically and is widely recognized by content recruiters.

Best for brand and B2B writers Authory

Auto-archives bylines and pulls live engagement metrics next to each piece.

Best for longform Read.cv or Notion site

Clean reading layout that lets editors scan a long piece without ads or navigation noise.

Open with your three strongest pieces. Editors rarely scroll past the top of the page. Pick clips that match the target job’s beat and format, not a chronological feed of everything you have published.

Add one line of context next to each clip. Publication, year, format, and one reach or engagement number. A line like ‘12,000 unique visitors in the first month’ carries more weight than the headline alone.

Keep the portfolio URL in the resume header. A header link, a summary link, and a ‘Selected Bylines’ block in the body give editors three paths to the work.

Awards, Bylines, and Notable Credits

Awards and notable credits give editors a quick read on the tier of work you have shipped. Keep this section focused on bylines and recognition that a hiring editor would know by name.

  • Society of Professional Journalists regional award, feature reporting, 2024
  • Folio: Eddie Award finalist, B2B feature, 2023
  • A front-page byline, with the publication named and the year
  • Editor's pick or staff selection on Substack, Medium, or Longreads
  • Cover feature credit in a print magazine with a national circulation

Writing Credentials That Get You the Job

Writers are not licensed, so certifications signal specialty depth rather than legal minimums. The credentials below tell editors and content directors which formats and tools you have trained in beyond your bylines.

  • Poynter ACES Certificate in Editing: Signals trained copyediting judgment for newsroom and brand teams that ship copy without a dedicated copy desk.
  • HubSpot Content Marketing Certification: Common ask for B2B and brand writer postings; pairs well with SEO bullets and conversion metrics.
  • Google Analytics Certification: Backs up traffic and engagement claims in your bullets and shows you can read your own performance data.
  • SHRM or industry-specific writing credential: For trade and vertical writers (HR, finance, healthcare), domain credentials show editors you can write past surface coverage.

Latest BLS Statistics for Writers

Where you publish and whether you write under your own name shape where you fall in the range. Senior content roles at tech and finance employers tend to cluster at the top. Geography matters less than vertical: a B2B SaaS writer in a midsize market can outpace a generalist in a top city.

Lead your resume with the verticals, tools, and reach numbers that map to the ceiling.

$85,780 National mean annual

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write a resume for a writing job when most of my work is freelance?

Treat each repeat client or publication as a role. List the publication name, the dates, and 2 or 3 bullets covering format, beat, and reach.

Group one-off pieces under a single 'Selected Freelance Clients' heading with logos or publication names.

Editors care about the masthead and the clip more than the contract type.

Should I list clips and bylines directly on the resume?

Yes. A 'Selected Bylines' block with 4 to 6 hyperlinked titles, publication, and year sits well between the summary and the work history.

Always include a single portfolio URL in the header as a backup.

How do I disclose AI tools on a writer resume without scaring off editors?

Name the tools and describe the workflow honestly. Frame AI as a draft, research, or outline aid that you verify and rewrite.

Skip phrases like 'AI-powered writing' or 'wrote with AI.' Editors read those as a signal you ship unedited generative copy.

If the employer has banned generative tools in postings, leave AI off the resume and lean on reporting and source bullets.

How should I write a writer resume with no published clips yet?

Build a small clip pack first, then write the resume around it. Three to five pieces on a Substack, Medium, or a personal site count as published work if traffic or subscriber numbers back them.

Pitch trade publications and local outlets for 2 or 3 real bylines. A small masthead carries more weight than a long summary about your writing voice.

What resume template should a writer use?

If you want a polished look, a professional template fits a writer resume. An ATS-friendly template offers another option.
